Mayor Joel Ruma was shot dead on 23 April 2025 during the campaign; his daughter Jamila substituted for his candidacy and was proclaimed mayor at 21, with her mother Brenda re-elected vice mayor. Brenda Ruma was herself mayor from 2016 to 2022. Joel’s brother Johnas sits on the town council.
